Learning how to be a "Proverbs 31 Woman" in the Modern World
Authentic conversations about faith, family and femininity.
Are you seeking a joyful, life-changing + Christ-centred vision of motherhood & femininity? Are you seeking authenticity, clarity, and confidence in your vocation as a Christian wife and mother, and seek to understand your husband's role and mission in the family, in his work, and in the world, and your divine calling as parents?
Sheila Nonato is a stay-at-home and homeschooling mom, and an award-winning journalist. Her work has been published by The Catholic Register (Toronto), Postmedia News - Ottawa (National Post), The Jordan Times (Amman), IRIN Middle East (UN news agency), The Canadian Press, The Globe and Mail, China Daily, The Christian Science Monitor
We will explore the Catholic Feminine Genius of women. Is popular culture the only lens within which we can view a woman's worth and purpose? The Catholic vision of motherhood and womanhood presents the "feminine genius," embodying the Christian virtues of service, sacrifice, and lasting joy and fulfillment in our God-given vocation as women, mothers, future mothers and spiritual mothers. We seek to bridge the gap between the understanding of women in the secular world vs. a countercultural Christian vision of a woman's role & power, rooted in the Bible and Church tradition.

Sheila was humbled and honoured to sit down with Keith and Estelle Nester at the Catholic Creator Conference in Steubenville, Ohio, last July, when Keith was the keynote speaker. Keith's conversion story from Methodist pastor to Catholic evangelist exploded on the internet. He now has over 100,000 subscribers on YouTube. Estelle is part of Down to Earth Ministry and the Rosary Crew, a daily online Rosary which her husband started and continues today. Estelle is a children's book author and she shot the photo of her husband for his book, "Unpacking the Mysteries of the Rosary."
During the inspirational conversation, we talked about:
*How a conversion to Catholicism reshapes marriage from the inside out, from sacramental grace to the daily choices that keep love steady.
*We share the habits and boundaries that help a couple stay close through career changes, public ministry, and the ordinary strain of life.
•seeing marriage as a sacrament ordered toward holiness
• adopting a “same team” approach during conflict
• convalidating a marriage in the Catholic Church and receiving real grace
• navigating conversion impacts on identity, family relationships, and finances
• downsizing as an act of trust when vocational plans change
• building “coffee time” (or a couples time that fits your schedule and style)
• praying together through daily readings, Rosary, Holy Mass
• creating a dedicated prayer space at home
• discovering the Latin Mass and learning its meaning over time
• setting limits around online attention and constant ministry demands
• anchoring marriage in 1 Corinthians 13 and protecting a spouse’s heart

Intro Clip: Sacramental Marriage
Estelle NesterOne thing I would say is in the Catholic Church, understanding that marriage is a Sacrament, that's huge. And when you learn more about that and embrace that and realize that your goal is to get each other to heaven, there's just something very powerful about that. But um I also think that understanding that in disagreements or anything like that, big change, we're on the same team. And we need to realize that husbands and wives, we're not against each other, we're fighting for the same thing. So I think when you mentally and emotionally like accept that, that also helps. What do you think?
Keith NesterI think that's that's important. You know, when we got married, we got married outside of the Catholic Church. So, um, because you know, she was raised Catholic, but we didn't get married in the Catholic Church. So technically our marriage wasn't sacramental in the way that it needed to be, right? So when when we came into the Catholic Church, you know, her coming back, me coming into the Catholic Church, that was part of our process was getting married in the Catholic Church. And when we did that, I remember being afraid to tell her that we needed to do that because I thought she's gonna be like, What are we doing? This is crazy, why do we have to do that? But she wasn't like that. She was like, "Okay, I wanna, I wanna to do that." And it was really simple. We just we were in our pastor's office, really, and we did this, and then well, wait, we went downstairs into the room where we were doing it. We started up there.
Estelle NesterI had to do Confession first. That's right, yes, and then we went downstairs.
Keith NesterAnd we went downstairs and we did this, but there was like four people there.
Estelle NesterYeah, yeah.
Keith NesterAnd it was so awesome. And I will say this, I feel like that took our marriage to a completely different place. So when she talks about the sacramental aspect of it, I have seen such a transformation.
Sheila NonatoThe path to holiness is the path of the Cross. Jesus' death and triumph on the Cross shows us what true love is: patience, sacrifice, forgiveness, and transformation in Christ. These are the antidote to society's fears and misconceptions about marriage. In the book of Genesis, we read, Therefore, a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. How can we level up our marriage? What are the secrets to a lasting, loving, and holy matrimony? Keith and Estelle Nester of Down to Earth Ministry share with us their struggles, triumphs, and how they don't just survive but actually thrive in marriage. Thank you for joining us, Sisters in Christ. Thank you and God bless.

Sheila NonatoWelcome to the Veil and Armour Podcast, and I am humbled and honoured to welcome Keith and Estelle Nester to our podcast today. And if you wouldn't mind leaving us in prayer, please.
Keith NesterSounds great. In the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Lord, we know that marriage is so important that it is the Covenant that mirrors who you are and your relationship with your church. And as we discussed that today, we pray that marriages would be helped, that people would recognize what they can do to make their marriages stronger and more focused on you. We pray for our conversation today that would be edifying and helpful to whoever would listen. And we know that that will happen because you promise in your word that you will go forth and you will bless those who bring the good news of the Gospel. And that's what we that's what we desire to do here today. We pray these things in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Olive Garden Meet Cute
Sheila NonatoAmen. Well, thank you so much again for joining me today.
Estelle NesterThank you for having us.
Sheila NonatoThank you.
Estelle NesterEstelle Nester
And you have a very beautiful love story that the first time you saw your wife, you told your friend that you were going to marry her. I did. I did.
Sheila NonatoAnd that what was that certainty? How did that come about?
Keith NesterBecause she was hot.
Estelle NesterMy goodness.
Sheila NonatoYou gotta tell the truth!
Keith NesterI have to say, you know, no, it I mean, I was, you know, I was 19 years old and and I didn't know her. I just saw her. And there was, I don't know, there was just something about her that I could just, I just looked at her, and she was filling out a job application at the at this restaurant that I worked at, the Olive Garden, and it was in Philadelphia, and I was making the raspberry lemonade, and I looked through the fake plants, and I saw her sitting there, and I just looked at her and I was just like, wow, that girl is exactly my type. You know, and I don't know, there was just something about her. I just instantly was was drawn to her. Didn't know a thing about her, but I I just knew right there. I'm like, that's the girl I'm gonna marry.
Sheila NonatoAmazing. And what drew you to Keith and what made you say yes?
Estelle NesterWell, let me tell you about the first time I saw Keith. Okay. So I thought he was very cute. And he was talking with his hands and he seemed super confident. And then I was like, wow, he seems arrogant. He's not my type at all. And I thought that was uh an interesting contrast to when we first met. However, when he came over and introduced himself and we started working together more, I realized that he was the nicest person I ever met. I thought uh as as we were getting to know each other, he told me that he was from Iowa. And I thought, oh, well, everybody from Iowa must be super nice because he is awesome. And I realized that he definitely was my type. So I think just his kindness and his openness about his faith is what drew me to him.
Sheila NonatoAmazing, amazing. And so we uh, you know, your conversion story is famous on the internet. Um, and I loved your Lila Rose interview, and I Matt Frad, the that interview is uh on my uh YouTube playlist. Oh, next up to be watched by with my family. But I am curious, how did your conversion story impact your family, your marriage, and your family?
Conversion Journey And Family Shockwaves
Keith NesterMan, it was huge because you know, when I met Estelle, she had been raised Catholic, sort of, culturally Catholic, I would say. Went to Catholic school, but didn't really practice the faith like so many people. And I was this on fire evangelical Christian. So when I met her, I was like, okay, I need to get you saved, I need to get you into Christianity. Which of course I went into ministry and we got married. I was a youth pastor at the time, and so we kind of entered into ministry as we entered into our relationship. And so we had 20 plus years of working in in the Protestant world in ministry, and then when I was on this journey towards Catholicism, I knew that it was going to be something that would be so just transformative for our family because she went through a lot coming out of what she was in with the Catholic world, even though they didn't really practice the practice the faith. When you leave Catholicism, even though it might not be the most prominent thing in your life, there's there's still a sense of identity there. And a lot of her family were like, What are you doing? You're becoming a Protestant. What's going on? So then now, 20 some years later, to say, Hey, I want to become Catholic, it was sort of like she went through all of this work to leave that and and and finally get people to just not think she had joined a weird cult. And then now, all these years later, to come back to Catholicism and for me to come into Catholicism was a big shift. Not to mention the fact that it was our whole life together and our whole uh situation with our job and our family. So it was a huge impact on our
Downsizing And Trusting God
Keith Nesterfamily.
Sheila NonatoAnd I was watching on YouTube your channel, and when you were on with him, um, you were talking about there's one day you were thinking about Catholicism, and one day you came, you came to your wife and you said, Um, I think we need to have a smaller house. What was that like? What what were you thinking? What were you what was running through your head?
Estelle NesterThat was the day that I realized that this was serious. Because when he was talking about, you know, quitting his job as a pastor at the ch at the Protestant church, I thought, okay, this this'll pass. It it'll be okay. Maybe we can kind of be Catholic, but you can still be a a pastor. And and then it's okay. And when he said to me, I think we need the smaller house, that's when I'm sure I just turned white and I was like, oh my goodness, this is for real. This this is really going to affect us. That's what it was like for me.
Keith NesterYeah, I could I could see the writing on the wall that I knew I was being drawn into the church, and we had this, you know, big, beautiful house that we bought. It was like our dream house, you know, after being married for what was it, 15 years at the time, something like that. And I had this nice, steady job at this church and it was growing and everything. I'm like, okay, we can do this. So we, you know, we got the dream house. And but then as I could feel myself being pulled toward Catholicism, I could just sense that there was a change coming. And I'm like, we need to downsize because we're not gonna be able to do this because who knows what in the world we're gonna do for money if I don't have this job anymore. And it was still probably another year or two before I finally became Catholic, but I had to just I was sort of sensing God was moving me in that direction. And when I look back on it now, I see God was setting us up to be able to be poor again.
Sheila NonatoWow.
Keith NesterSo it worked out. So yeah, we get we lost the big, beautiful house. But the truth is, once we downsized, we had to we still moved into a fixer-upper that was smaller and older, but then we were able to fix that house up and make it, you know, for us, and we still live in that house today. And we love it. And we love it. It's great,
Sheila NonatoIt is beautiful. So your marriage survived that and flourished, blossomed 29 years.
Staying Married Through Big Change
Sheila NonatoNow that the actually, according to statistics, the divorce rate is actually declining, supposedly, but the divorce rate among older adults is so later marriages is increasing. Now, how do you stay married? How do you stay married to each other? And since you are also working together, how how do you all make that work?
Keith NesterGo ahead.
Estelle NesterWell, I I think it's um multiple things. You can't just say one thing or anything like that. But one thing I would say is in the Catholic Church, understanding that marriage is a sacrament, that's huge. And when you learn more about that and embrace that and realize that your goal is to get each other to heaven, there's just something very powerful about that. We do also um do some practical things uh that we can probably talk about, but um I also think that understanding that in disagreements or anything like that, big change, we're on the same team.
So when when we came into the Catholic Church, you know, her coming back, me coming into the Catholic Church, that was part of our process was getting married in the Catholic Church, getting our marriage convalidated or blessed, or however you want to talk about it. And when we did that, I remember being afraid to tell her that we needed to do that because I thought she's gonna be like, what are we doing? This is crazy. Why do we have to do that? But she wasn't like that. She was like, Okay, I wanna, I wanna to do that. And it was really simple. We just we were in our pastor's office, really, and we did this, and then well, wait, wait, we went downstairs into the room where we were doing it. We started up there then.
Estelle NesterI had to do confession first.
Keith NesterThat's right.
Estelle NesterYes, and then we went downstairs.
Keith NesterThen we went downstairs and we did this, but there was like four people there.
Estelle NesterYeah, yeah.
Keith NesterAnd it was so awesome. And I will say this I feel like that took our marriage to a completely different place. So when she talks about the sacramental aspect of it, I have seen such a transformation because that was a really challenging time in our marriage. Yes, and in our lives because of all the the change that was happening. And yet I feel like the grace that we received through that has been phenomenal. So I feel like in some ways you could say, How did your marriage survive that that term tumultuous time? It actually got so much better because we really had to trust in the Lord and we received so much grace from the sacrament.
Estelle NesterAnd yes,
Coffee Time And Daily Prayer Rhythm
Estelle Nesterplease go ahead. Yeah, and I was gonna say some of the practical things that we do together, because now we do work together, so we had to come up with some practical things that we make sure that we do outside of the ministry. That is that's just for us. And one of the things we started uh even before this was what we call coffee time, where every single morning we wake up and we spend at least a half hour, sometimes an hour, where we make coffee. Keith usually makes the coffee in the morning, it's awesome.
Estelle NesterAnd we have conversation, there are no phones, and we sit. Sometimes we just go over what do we need to do today, but a lot of times we end up finding ourselves in these deep conversations, even still, even after being married for so long, we're still learning about each other and having these wonderful conversations. And I really feel like everybody should do some sort of coffee time where you just sit and connect with your spouse. And maybe it doesn't work in the morning. Maybe you have little kids and you have to do things with them or they're you're too busy. Maybe you do something after dinner or after the kids go to bed, but just set aside some time where you just have conversation with your spouse. I feel like that's been amazing.
Keith NesterThat's huge. And we started incorporating into that doing the daily Gospel readings or the daily daily scripture readings for the mass every day. So that's what we start. Yes. Before we even like, hey, how you doing? The first thing that happens is we sit down, the coffee's made, and and I pull out the my phone and go to iBravery and start, and I'm like, okay, a reading from whatever book, and we just do the readings together, and then we begin everything else, and then we end every day in our prayer room, um, just praying together about and then when we when we go together at the end of the night to pray, because we do a daily rosary too, so there's a lot of stuff like that, but that that time of prayer at night is it's extemporaneous.
Keith NesterIt's it's not like, all right, we're gonna pray the office ready. I mean, we can do those things, but but we also want to just protect time for us to come before the Lord and just pray for the intentions that are on our hearts and the people that have asked us to pray for them and for our family, so we have this running list that we're always adding to and thinking about so that we we we start the day with the gospel, we end the day with with that prayer time as well. And I just feel like you need those those things to be part of the rhythm of of your life as a as a married couple so that your faith doesn't just become another piece of your life, but that it's the foundation of your life.
Building A Prayer Room At Home
Sheila NonatoAnd so you said you had a prayer room. Is this like a dedicated prayer room? How is it set up?
Keith NesterWell, it used to be our son's bedroom, but all of our kids are you know out of the house now. And we actually made a video on my YouTube channel. It's called Prayer Room Makeover. It's a two-part video where you can see what we did where we transformed a bedroom of a teenage boy. Well, I guess he was older than that, but um, into a room just for prayer. It's pretty, it's a pretty fun little video series. Uh, but yeah, it's a dedicated room just for prayer.
Sheila NonatoOkay, that sounds actually I'd love to have that in our own house. Um, unfortunately, all our rooms are occupied. Right. We don't have a big house, but you know, somewhere, a little corner.
Keith NesterLittle corner. It could be anywhere, but we we just happen to have room for that. So we we were able to do that.
Sheila NonatoYeah. And I love how Christ is at the center of your marriage, and um you go to Mass together, I assume. I mean, absolutely. Yeah, of course. Absolutely.
Discovering The Latin Mass Together
Sheila NonatoUm, and I was again on your YouTube channel channel, you were talking about um, I think the Latin Mass. You were what what was that like? I know it's a little bit controversial, maybe to some people. Um, what did you think about it?
Estelle NesterGo ahead, because she found it first, actually. Well, the the reason I went to the Latin Mass for the very first time was because the time worked out the best that day. I had uh a busy schedule with the kids. They were they were a little younger when we first went, when I first went. And I thought it was just gonna be I it was gonna follow the English, but it was just gonna be in Latin. So I thought, well, this will be easy. I could just follow along, no big deal. Well, what I learned when I got there was oh no, it was completely different. And I went through the kids were actually with me, which was crazy, and we, you know, went through the mass and it was different, and I walked out of there confused. But throughout the week, I found myself thinking about the mass. And when Keith he was out of town when I went, when he came back, I said, "Keith, I went to the Latin Mass and I really want you to try it." I think there's something about it that is just drawing me to go back. So he went, and we were both confused still. It's still very difficult to figure out everything. And again, we talked about it probably at a coffee time, and I said, There's something that is special about like the priest leading his people. That's what I was feeling. And I just loved it. So we decided that we would try it a few more times in a row. And after about five times, maybe we decided this is it. This is we're gonna figure this out and we're gonna do it. And that was many years ago now.
Keith NesterThat was, I mean, that wasn't long after we became Catholic.
Estelle NesterYeah.
Keith NesterAnd because when we came into the church, we didn't know about all of the liturgy wars, we didn't know about we just, and to be honest with you, I I thought that, oh well, probably every parish has a Latin Mass somewhere, you know. I wasn't really paying attention because when we came into the Catholic Church, we can't the parish that we came into is still the parish that we go to today. So we didn't bounce around to a bunch of different parishes, we we just landed where we are.
Keith NesterBut once we once we found it, it was there was like like she said, there was something about it that just drew us in. And it's not that we're like against the Novus Ordo or anything like that. We still do that for daily mass or whatever when we're traveling, but we just I don't know, there was something transcendent about it. And for me, as a as a guy who would come out of modern evangelical contemporary worship into the beauty and the history of Catholic Church, I I am drawn more to things that are completely the opposite of what I was into before. Uh and so for me, it was it was it was something so otherworldly that I just I just fell in love with it. And and I'm I'm not always um you know engaged in every little aspect all the time. Sometimes I'm with them with the Missal going through everything and following along everywhere, and sometimes I'm just like receiving it. And that's what I love about it so much is there's so much happening, everything has meaning, and it's absolutely beautiful.
Fame Boundaries And Protecting Family
Sheila NonatoAnd so you you were mentioning before um this music uh and how everything is so different. You you left rock and roll essentially, and you left the Methodist church, and you're now embraced by the Catholic Church. What is it like? You know, you have over a hundred thousand subscribers on YouTube. What is it like you kind of giving up your liberty of privacy or maybe a lot of your privacy? Well, how does that affect you as a couple? How do you protect yourself from, you know, I guess the dangers of getting uh all of that to your head or um just focus not focusing on Christ? How do you keep yourself centred? I guess is my question.
Keith NesterWell, you know, I'm old enough now, I guess, that I don't really care about notoriety or any of that stuff like that. I'm I'm and maybe it's not an age thing, but I think for me, if I was younger and all this kind of stuff was happening to me, it would probably mess me up a little bit more. Um but at at my age, I guess I feel like I know what's really important. And it's not how many subscribers you have, it's not whether people, you know, think of you in a certain way. My family and and my personal faith is. Is so important to me that there's really nothing that gets in the way of that so much. Now, as far as protecting things, I think that that's it that's important. We have to make sure that we don't just constantly talk about ministry, ministry, ministry and all of that all the time.
Keith NesterThere has to be time for Estelle and I. And sometimes we have to be really intentional about that because with the world that we live in, how everything's on your phone all the time, there's constantly getting messages, you know, I'm constantly getting messages, people reaching out, asking for things. And sometimes I just need to just be like, okay, I'm not dealing with that right now. And she's she's really good about helping me with that because I'm more of a people pleaser. So I want to, oh, I gotta get somebody to ask me for something. I gotta give it to them. Somebody wants to talk to me. I gotta talk to them. And she's good at saying, you know what? You just need to be done. Just put it down. You need to be done. We're we're doing this. So that helped that helps a lot. I think it's easier actually if you're married, because you have that that check and you have that person that can reel you back if you start to spiral into that too much. Um, so that's been helpful for me.
Estelle NesterI was gonna say the same thing, but you know, early on in his ministry when he was a pastor, the the ministry blew up and we were young, and that was more difficult back then to deal with the attention and being like the coolest thing around. So I feel like we worked through that and we figured out no, you know, that's all that's cool and all, but marriage and our family that's way more important. And I think going through that early on in our marriage really has helped you now. Now it's not even a thing that we deal with.
Keith NesterI made a lot of mistakes when I was younger, you know, with all of that. And and uh it cost me a lot, you know. So I think like I learned a lot of things the hard way. And when I became Catholic, I I didn't want any of that. Like I just wanted to just focus on my family and my faith, and all this ministry stuff sort of happened against, I don't want to say against my will, but really against my plan. Because I had never planned to do any public ministry ever again. Um I wasn't against it, I guess I should say, but it wasn't my plan. So it was really important to me to just be Catholic for the sake of being Catholic and not have like this ulterior motive of like, okay, how do I turn this into a job?
Keith NesterThat was the furthest thing from my mind. And it was a, you know, it was a year later or so before people started asking me to do things like give talks or whatever, or make videos, or write a book or whatever. And I did that stuff sort of on the side of other things. It wasn't my main focus. And then in 2020, everything just completely changed and all this stuff just started coming to me. And we said, okay, what are we gonna do here? And we had these conversations about how do we do this in a healthy way, where it doesn't become like you get full of yourself or you start to think that you're great because you have a YouTube channel or because people want to talk to you or whatever. Like to me, I'm not interested in any of that. You know, to me, what's what's important is being authentic and being focused on your faith.
Scripture Anchor And Marriage Advice
Sheila NonatoAnd my last question: what would be a Bible verse that would sort of capture the essence of your marriage and your ministry?
Keith NesterGood question.
Estelle NesterWell, definitely the love is patient, love is kind.
Keith NesterI would agree, you know, first Corinthians. Yeah, the the love Chapter in 1 Corinthians, I think, is those things that list is so powerful because there's so many different ways that you can think about do I embody these things? Are these things part of who we are? And if they're not, then you kind of have to recenter.
Estelle NesterI remember learning about that verse, and it was early on when we were newly married, and I went to a Bible study, and we were looking into that verse, and one of the practices was to put your name in place of the word love and see where if you measure up. So I was looking at that and I was like, Estelle is patient, and I was like, Oh, I can't continue because I need to work on patience first. So I feel like that uh has really helped our marriage.
Sheila NonatoAnd I'm gonna sneak one question, one more question. So for those young people who may be considering marriage, what or I guess they're preparing for marriage, let's say, what is your main advice for them?
Keith NesterI would say to really get to know that person's heart, know your spouse's heart, and take the responsibility on to protect and care for that person's heart. Don't focus on what they do that you like or that they don't like because nobody's perfect, everyone's gonna make mistakes, everyone's going to sin, everyone's going to disappoint each other. But get to know their heart. What do they care about? What matters to them? Why do they do what they do? And take on the responsibility to say, my job is to protect and cherish her heart. I think if we do that with each other, then the rest of the things will fall into place.
Estelle NesterI mean, I agree with that. And I would just throw in one little practical thing if I wanted to, and I'd be like, have time together with no phones. I mean, that's that's it. Yeah. One sentence.
Sheila NonatoWell, thank you so much again for joining us.
Closing Prayer And Prayer Request
Sheila NonatoAnd um, could we sh close off with a short prayer if you don't mind? Absolutely.
Keith NesterIn the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, amen. Lord, we thank you for this opportunity to be together to talk about marriage. And we pray that our marriages could all mirror uh what your will is for them, Lord. Help the grace to flow and help people's lives to be transformed by the power that you give to us through that grace. We pray these things in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen.
Sheila NonatoThank you so much. Thank you very much for joining us this week, Sisters in Christ, and thank you to Keith and Estelle Nestor for the gift of their testimony about their marriage. Keith and Estelle recently returned from a pilgrimage to Lourdes, where Estelle was able to go to the miraculous baths. Let us pray for Estelle as her husband announced that she recently had surgery related to a cancer diagnosis. We will be praying for you, Nestor family. Thank you for the gift of your family, the gift of your ministry, Down to Earth Ministry.
Sheila NonatoAnd we will pray for you, Keith and Estelle and your family. And Estelle, we will most especially remember you in prayers. And for anyone who feels called, feel free to say a prayer to our Lady of Lourdes for Estelle and for her full recovery. Thank you, friends, and join us again next time when we will again explore the covenant of marriage and more stories of conversion. God bless!
Thank you + God bless!
